Southwest Airlines Announces Intent to Service GSP

Southwest officially announced today that they would begin providing services to Greenville/Spartanburg (GSP) and Charleston International Airports (CHS).

In Southwest’s official press statement, they made it clear that they were not going to rely on government subsidies, settling the debate in the statehouse on whether or not a airlines subsidies bill should be passed to get low cost carriers to South Carolina.

“The airline’s service will not be dependent on pending legislation to provide air service subsidies.”

Southwest states that they plan on beginning services to GSP and CHS starting in 2011 and will not have to purchase new aircraft to begin servicing the area.

Needless to say, we are more than excited to see businesses not relying on the government to grow.  The moves they made 10 years ago and the optimization of their systems has allowed them to be extremely successful.

My wife on the other hand is not as happy.  Her travel crazy husband is already salivating at the new opportunities to see the world, more often, and cheaper!
