Kelly Payne "IT Kids" Coordinator

We have been seeing the name Kelly Payne pop up all over the place over the past few weeks and over the last year.  After seeing all the buzz on FITSNews and a plug from Earl Capps, we had to check her out.

So after tracking her down on Facebook (actually, she tracked me down a few weeks ago promoting the “IT Kids“) and a few Facebook messages, we were able to catch up with Kelly for a few minutes yesterday and ask her a few questions and learn more about her.  For those of you who have not had the privilege to talk to her, you will immediately find that she is a pleasure to talk with.

Kelly received her B.A. from the University of South Carolina in 1991 with a major in Political Science and History.  In 2005, she received her Master’s degree in Social Studies with distinguished honors.  She is currently a teacher at Dutch Fork High School and working throughout the summer with South Carolina Policy Council.

Payne also coordinated the efforts to get the Alive at 25 program active in South Carolina and has established “The Den of Payne” in her civics class at Dutch Fork High School.  “The Den of Payne” has attracted various state leaders including, Nikki Haley, Gov. Mark Sanford, SC House Speaker Bobby Harrell, Attorney General Henry McMaster and many more.

So, the begging question, is she running for Superintendent of Education?

As of now, she will neither confirm nor deny the rumors abroad that she is running.  She has confirmed that multiple activists have approached her and encouraged her to consider running though.

Tell us what you think!

We have just received word that a Draft Kelly Payne Facebook Group has been created.

I am one of the privledged kids to have Ms.Payne as a teacher. Ms. Payne has been the best teacher I have ever had. She has taught me so much in just a year and I have grown so much due to her. She has been the most influential person I have ever met and I consider her to be my role model. When I found out that Ms. Payne has been given the oppertunity to run for State Super., I was so excited!I know that Ms. Payne is the perfect person for this job. She would make the changes South Carolina needs. I know some people underestimate Ms. Payne’s ability because they see that she is a school teacher, but Ms. Payne is so much more than that. Anyone who has met her knows this. I am behind Ms. Payne 110% in any decision she makes- and that includes if she decides not to run for the State Super. I know that Ms. Payne will make the best decision for her and her family.

Kelly would run in office so well. She knows what she is doing and she has the best interests of the people of this community at heart. She has my vote! :D

I talked to her last night, and Kelly is in, and was nice enough to allow me to let the cat out of the political bag.. Lucky us !! Can’t wait to see the impact she has.

  • Worried

Would we choose a private first class to be the top general in Iraq? Or a freshman prosecutor to be on the Supreme Court?
Why would we select a classroom teacher to be the head of statewide K-12 education policy and administration? No doubt she has innovative ideas and perspective, and her background in education is a necessary condition for the State Superintendent’s Office, but it is hardly a sufficient condition in and of itself.

We should choose her because she has the experience that is needed for this position. She has the right mind set as well. She is persistent and on the right track to further South Carolina’s educational system.
