What: Press Conference for the “Truth in Spending” legislation.
City of Simpsonville, City of Fountain Inn, and members of the Greenville County will announce plans to place their governments’ transactions online and make records available to the public free of charge.
Under current law, citizens must go through the burden and expense of filing requests under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain public records.
Since 2006, 14 states and five of the nation’s 40 largest school districts have created online check registers at absolutely no cost to the taxpayer. Greenville-area elected officials will explain how these successful models can bring transparency and accountability to their governments as well.
The city of Aiken, Anderson County, Cayce, Irmo, Turbeville, and Charleston County have already voluntarily posted their check register online. Officials from Columbia, South Congaree, and Dorchester County have announced their financial information will go online soon as well.
Everyone is urged to attend this press conference who are in favor of a transparent government.
