The Queers Come Marching In

It appears that PRIDE (another word or symbol that has been hijacked and meaning altered) has decided to make a march on Spartanburg.

In an effort to fight for their rights, they are planning to march in Spartanburg and have a large rally at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Spartanburg on June 20th.  Fortunately for me and my family, we will be somewhere on vacation that day.

As one commenter mentioned, it will be very interesting to see if the Democratic leadership will show up at the event.

We first learned about the event after trolling the forums at goupstate.com that provided a link to the facebook group.

I hope there is a counter-protest! Apparently now they are including “Intersex” as part of the movement, whatever that means. I saw this stuff over at the Spartanburg Spark website. Weird bunch over at that site. Kind of like the alternative underground in Spartanburg.

  • eb

It’s called free speech, any true conservative would support their right to speak while still disagreeing with their message.

Counter protesting would be a counter productive waste of time.

  • Jeff

As a conservative, of course I support free speech. Even their free speech. But free speech also works both ways…we have a right to be critical of their agenda AND counter protest if people want.

True conservatives also believe in the balance between freedom and order in society and the role of long-held tradition in the law and society. Something like, say, the crazy idea that marriage involves a man and a woman. Crazy, right?

Frankly as a conservative, and I am glad to know that most people in this county think this way, it’s not something to celebrate when counter-cultural movements want to impose their immorality on the rest of us. So feel free, Upstate Pride, to exercise your freedom of speech, but don’t think we’re going to be creating any special rights for you like so-called “gay marriage” anytime soon.

    Your hatred is disgusting.

    • http://www.theconservativist.com Gary Coats

Snead, this is not hatred. I gave a fair report of the event and didn’t criticize the group in any fashion. If you are referring to the title, I must ask what the difference is between it and the TV show, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”?

  • Jeff

Plus look at the Facebook site for this group…they call their “minority” GBLT plus “Intersex” and “Queer”. I guess queer is an OK word then, and I don’t know what the heck Intersex is but I guess I am a little curious.

    • http://www.theconservativist.com Gary Coats

Does this make “queer” the equivalent of the n-word?

  • http://www.wolfereports.com Wes Wolfe

I was really disappointed to see this post. Intolerance and prejudice may be a part of South Carolina’s fabric, but I expected better.

    • http://www.theconservativist.com Gary Coats

Wes, please explain what is wrong with this post? You have my personal email if you feel it shouldn’t be discussed on the blog.

The group refers to themselves as Gay Lesbian Transvestite Bisexual Intersex Queer. I have yet to hear a legitimate reason besides the standard talking points of this is hatred, intolerance, and prejudice.

  • http://NONE MANLY

I SUPPOSE THAT THESE PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE NOR READ THE ” HOLY BIBLE”
IT SAYS THAT LOT AND HIS FAMILY WERE “VEXED” BY LIVING AMONG THESE PEOPLE ! I PERSONALY AM NOT HAPPY BEING ” VEXED” BY THESE PEOPLE BUT THEIR DAY ( PUNISHMENT ) IS COMING. ( NOT THE ONE THAT THEY WANT )

  • walterdavid

And we wonder why we’re 49 or 50 in everything. You’re pathetic.

  • JB

First and foremost, I would like to understand the reasoning behind your choice of the name “Conservativist”. I was not familiar with this word, so I pointed my browser to dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/conservativist) and here’s what I have learned: a conservativist is “a person who is reluctant to accept changes and new ideas.” So, my first question is: why would you willingly call yourself a conservativist? Are you proud of your reluctance to entertain ideas and viewpoints that contradict your own beliefs? Would it be so bad to try to empathize with someone and, at least, make an attempt to see something from another perspective? Is there something noble about clinging to dogmatic and prejudiced ideas?

Secondly, you claim “…this is not hatred. I gave a fair report of the event and didn’t criticize the group in any fashion.” Forgive me, but I believe you did criticize the event and this post was clearly motivated by, at the very least, intolerance, if not hatred. How does “Fortunately for me and my family, we will be somewhere on vacation that day.” not qualify as criticism, or at least a little passive-aggression? I will concede that you did not make a direct statement criticizing the event or the people who will be participating, but I firmly believe your statement implied your dislike of the event and the participants. Why else would you feel “fortunate” for you and your family to be out of the city when the event was taking place?

Also, I believe your usage of the word “queer” in this article would also qualify as hatred on some level. Given the context of the post, I would surmise you decided to use this term for its shock value, since it is most commonly used in a derogatory manner, and not because it is a commonly accepted term to respectfully refer to a segment of the population.

In his first comment, Jeff said “…it’s not something to celebrate when counter-cultural movements want to impose their immorality on the rest of us…” Surprisingly enough, I would have to agree that the GLBT community, for the most part, is indeed a “counter-culture”…it should be proud to be known as one. The “culture” that exists in many portions of America today is one of intolerance, ignorance, prejudice, and violence. This “culture” accepts only those individuals who conform to the prescribed requirements of membership in the culture. Simply put, if you are not a white heterosexual male or female…you’re not worthy of membership in this club. Now, do not misunderstand me, I believe we have seen great advancements in civil rights for minorities in this country over the past 50 years. But let us not forget that until 1920, women were not guaranteed the right to vote; and it was not until 1954 that African-American citizens were guaranteed equal access to education by the U.S. Supreme Court. Our nation has a well-documented history of intolerance for any person who was not fortunate enough to have been born a heterosexual, white male…and this “culture” continues to permeate our country today.

Later in the same comment Jeff said “…So feel free, Upstate Pride, to exercise your freedom of speech, but don’t think we’re going to be creating any special rights for you like so-called “gay marriage” anytime soon.” Once again, I have to say I agree with Jeff…we’re not asking for any “special” rights…we’re just asking for rights that are already granted to members of the “privileged” class in America, rights which should be granted to each and every member of the human race.

I leave you with these final thoughts:

“Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?” ~Ernest Gaines

“Straight Americans need… an education of the heart and soul. They must understand – to begin with – how it can feel to spend years denying your own deepest truths, to sit silently through classes, meals, and church services while people you love toss off remarks that brutalize your soul.” ~Bruce Bawer, The Advocate, 28 April 1998

“The plague of mankind is the fear and rejection of diversity: monotheism, monarchy, monogamy and, in our age, monomedicine. The belief that there is only one right way to live, only one right way to regulate religious, political, sexual, medical affairs is the root cause of the greatest threat to man: members of his own species, bent on ensuring his salvation, security, and sanity.” ~Thomas Szasz

      Hi JB,

Queer was chosen because it generalizes the lifestyle. From dictionary.com, “strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different.” I could have said “gays” or “lesbians”, but queer covered the broad spectrum of your community.

As for my fortunate statement, I was simply stating that I am glad we wouldn’t be here for the party. I must ask if you attend all the events you disagree with? Have you ever stated that you are glad you were not attending an event? When you do not support something, most likely you state that you do not support it and make it known. It’s the same difference.

I respect your rights to free speech and your efforts to obtain what you feel is just. I will support any organization that is exercising its right to free speech, but that does not mean that I support with their position.

Website name, I chose it because I was looking for a web 2.0 “ish” name playing with the word conservative. “Conservatist” was not available and that is how I ended up with “Conservativist”.

In the end though, you and I have philosophical differences. I disagree with you and you with me. It’s going to happen. I wish your group the best of luck in organizing your rally and exercising your rights.

  • Paul

JB, learn this and learn this now: Sodomite vermin will NEVER be accepted until they give up their need to participate in the most vile forms of human sexual behavior outside of pedophilia. Until then, get back into the closet where you belong. You have no idea that you and your ilk are setting the stage for a very “messy” affair. You and the homo-mafia will FAIL in your quest to indoctrinate the youth of the U.S. and you are only going to cause the Sodomites much more pain.

DEATH TO ALL ENEMIES OF THE UNITED STATES!!!!

    • gb

I hate to inform you Paul, but the young people in the US have already been indoctrinated. 58% of people under the age of 34 support gay marriage.
By 2050, the White/Europeans will no longer be in the majority.
Change is gonna come whether you like it or not.

  • JB

    Quoting myself:

“The “culture” that exists in many portions of America today is one of intolerance, ignorance, prejudice, and violence. This “culture” accepts only those individuals who conform to the prescribed requirements of membership in the culture. Simply put, if you are not a white heterosexual male or female…you’re not worthy of membership in this club…Our nation has a well-documented history of intolerance…and this “culture” continues to permeate our country today.”

I love it when people prove my points for me.

  • Bobby Sessions

It is apparent by the replys that a lot of people are not Christians.
While God loves everyone including Gay people it is wrong and it is an
obomination to God read Romans in the Bible. If you got a problem with
it take it up with the Author.

    • Kurt

Perhaps you should just let God take care of it then.

As you said… the issue is between that person and God. Shouldn’t a good Christian avoid judging and let God and the individual work it out?

I’m always confused by the political arm of the christian faith. I mean, I know you believe people that do certian things will suffer in the afterlife… but aren’t you supposed to let them make their own choices and let God judge? It always seemed to me that attacking these people was a very non-Christian act… and endagered YOUR standing in the afterlife.

      • Katie

Gary Coats, the term queer doesn’t necessarily have as much negative connotation as it has in the past. In fact, I think there is an effort in “taking it back,” hence GLBTIQ, with Q meaning queer.

I also think that the reason people are questioning your title is because of the context in which the word “queer” was used. You used it in the title of an blog shedding a less-than-positive light on a gay pride parade.

I’m sure there are many people now who may still be sensitive to the word, and might not be clear on the current usage on the word for the GLBTIQ community.
But, my only question to you is, at your own discretion, what do you believe the word “queer” means?

        • Michael

I think he said above that he used the term queer because the dictionary definition fits the event he is blogging about. “Strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different”. I’d say this pretty much describes the gay lifestyle, especially those that would want to make a scene about it.

          • Katie

Yes, I’m sure it does. But I’m wondering in what context he meant it, because it’s not simply like an objective, scientific term–it’s a term that has been used to describe a certain type of people. With it comes a history of contexts and connotations. Stupid, retard, dumb, and a number of other words are examples of those that, while their dictionary definitions “fit” things, have a negative connotation due to its usage.

The word queer is a tricky one, and it’s likely to be a confusing as the title of a piece that is not objective, nor in favor of the GLBTIQ community.

          • Sarah

It’s just a blog post. Context doesn’t matter and it doesn’t matter if the word “queer” confuses people. Gary is a blogger and this is an opinion piece.

And so what if it has a negative connotation anyway? Does everyone have to accept the gay agenda being shoved down our throats. I don’t care if you want to have your march but most of Spartanburg’s families are not that interested in it or your agenda.

          • JB

            Quoting Sarah:

“Does everyone have to accept the gay agenda being shoved down our throats.”

I hardly think the “gay agenda” as you term it is being shoved down anyone’s throat. You should examine the practices of the religious organizations present in America, and throughout the majority of the world for that matter, if you want an in-depth study of forcing something upon the general population.

  • Jacob
  • Richard

Gary–you are doing a great job. Don’t let the haters get to you. Keep up the good work.

  • Jai

Let me address one point a poster said. “True conservatives also believe in the balance between freedom and order in society and the role of long-held tradition in the law and society. Something like, say, the crazy idea that marriage involves a man and a woman. Crazy, right? ” Of course there must be balance between freedom and order BUT to imply that ALL long-held traditions and laws in society are worthwhile and good is to show ignorance of history. First, at one time in this country woman were not allowed to vote. Suppose someone wanted to take away your wives or daughters..or your right to vote and say “it was a long-held tradition in early America” would you support that?????? Also, remember that at one time in this country only the landed class could vote. Remember, that too was a long-held tradition. My point is just because something is the law and a long-held tradition does not make it right.

    • James

      Jai,
The simple difference is that being a man or being a landowner or being a white are not inherent qualities that must exist in order to exercise the vote. This is why it was both morally and legally wrong to deny women and blacks the right to vote. Similarly, race is not a quality that is inherent to the act of marriage–this is why it was both morally and legally wrong to deny the right of a black man to marry a white woman, or vice-versa. But gender is an inherent quality of marriage–while there is no difference between a black human and a white human (other than skin color), there are immense differences between a male human and a female human. The difference in gender that must exist between two partners in a marriage is not discriminatory–it is inherent to the very institution of marriage itself.
