Is Rick Beltram the Forum King in Spartanburg?

I must admit, Rick Beltram and I have had our conflicts in the past as seen on theconservativist and in the Herald Journal here and here.

But something has to be said about his ability to rally people together for large gatherings to hear candidates speak at different forums and meetings. Look at the figures.

  • 19 – Forum hosted by 103.7 JAMZ, WSPA, and the League of Women at Wofford College on June 1, 2008
  • 50 – Forum hosted by the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce on May 30, 2008
  • 400 – Forum hosted by Spartanburg County GOP (Rick Beltram et al.) at Ron’s Family Restaurant (formerly Ron’s Hog Pen) on May 12, 2008

The problem is that each of the events not hosted by the GOP were poorly publicized.

Rick Beltram has created a name for himself and the news outlets know that this will sell.

I had seen “I vote 103.7″ signs around town, but that didn’t encourage me to listen to there station to know what was going on. For all I knew, it was a contest for best radio station. Not once did I see it in the newspapers, the blogs, the radio (I don’t listen to 103.7 JAMZ, they probably advertised it there) or TV. The same can be said about the Chamber of Commerce forum.

It also doesn’t help to schedule such an event on a Sunday afternoon from 4pm – 8pm. Most individuals are at church or visiting family.

This leaves me to make one quick conclusion about forums. Publicity matters…You better have a Presidential Candidate (well known that is) or Rick Beltram making noise to have a large turnout.
